Five performers combine elements of theatre, dance, invention and rhythmic intricacy to create a powerful and imaginative production that has wowed critics and audiences alike.
Founded in 1993, STRIKE is a high energy drumming group made up of New Zealand's most outstanding percussionists. While working in a variety of different styles, STRIKE specialises in movement-based or choreographed percussion. This concept of "Percussion in motion" is developed in their Stage Shows.
They are committed to working with New Zealand composers, as well as creating their own pieces. STRIKE is often called on to collaborate with other musicians or groups from dancers to symphony orchestras. STRIKE creates its own "classical crossover" audience extending their understanding of percussive based music and movement. The mix of musical influences, Pacific, classical and contemporary, combined with the movement and theatre-based presentation, make STRIKE unique in the world of percussion-based music.
The backbone of the STRIKE shows are large steel scaffolding structures called cubes. They support an ever increasing number of percussion instruments in a variety of positions designed for maximum choreographic impact. Players climb, hang, run and play on the cubes themselves as well as the instruments. STRIKE can also create a unique custom designed performance for events of all sizes.
The Acoustic show is a more intimate yet still high energy stage show designed for smaller venues but it adapts content from STRIKE WIRED as well as adding much new material. It presents the performers “up close and personal” in a way that is unique to a smaller venue.
STRIKE is excitingly different and audiences are left both inspired and entertained.
